Essence of Japan

by Peter Greenhalgh

About 6,000 extrordinary silk ornaments hang in the lobby of a hotel in Tokyo to celebrate the Girls’ Doll Festival, Hina-matsuri. The ornaments, which are said to bring good luck and ward of evil spirits, were hand-stitched from the cloth of old silk kimonos by Mitsuyo Matsuo and her group of 42 artists. In the middle of the display are traditional wooden Matrao dolls from the Kamikamo Shrine in Kyoto. They include depictions of the Emperor and Empress during Japan’s Heian period (794-1185 AD)
